German I

DESCRIPTION:

German I in high school is designed to give students a basic introduction to the four components of learning a world language- speaking, reading, writing, and listening.  Since level 1 is at the beginning, no prior knowledge of the language is assumed.  We will learn basic conversational vocabulary and phrases and move throughout the year learning how to communicate at the basic level in the German language.  Students will learn how to order food in a café, how to shop for clothes, and how to describe themselves and the people they know.  Grammar will be learned at a steady pace, for the purpose of furthering communication in the language.

Colleges require a minimum of 2 years of the same language for admissions to college.

Pre-Algebra Upper Middle School Math (7th/8th Grade)

Please note: A placement test must be taken before the first day of class by all students who have not previously taken a HARC math class.  The test is to ensure that your student is in the best class for their abilities.  Depending on how well a student performs, he/she will be placed in the appropriate class before classes begin to provide a smooth transition.

Would you like to take the fear out of algebra and make sure your child is well prepared for high school math?  Pre-algebra is the place to make that happen.  Not only will the class focus on solidifying and cementing important math skills, but it will introduce basic algebra concepts concretely through Dr. Borenson’s Hands on Equation program (see Instructor’s Vimeo).

We will be using Saxon Pre-Algebra (3rd Edition) which provides a balanced, integrated mathematics program.  We will cover concepts such as prime and composite numbers, fractions and decimals (which must be mastered before Algebra), order of operations, coordinates, exponents, radicals, ratios, algebraic phrases and concepts, probability, and more.

Manipulatives are an intrigal part of classroom instruction making math concepts meaningful and memorable.   Students will have time in class to practice what they learn.  Parents are asked to participate by using the answer key to correct a portion of the weekly homework, as well as monitoring exams.
