English Grammar and Composition (EGAC)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a comprehensive grammar, spelling/vocabulary, and beginning writing course. The class is offered primarily to 8th and 9th grade students.

The grammar curriculum for this course is Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind (red book). This curriculum has been developed to exercise continuous review. Students can expect thorough instruction and practice in all areas of grammar including types of sentences, capitalization, punctuation, diagramming, all parts of speech, clauses, antecedents, modifiers, subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and much more.
In addition to an extensive grammar focus, this course also provides instruction for writing beginning with the writing process and well-rounded paragraphs. By the end of the year, students will be able to put their writing knowledge into use by writing a five- paragraph essay and a personal narrative, as well as shorter pieces. This course also provides a vocabulary component so that students can grow their vocabulary and put their new words into use through their writing.

This class is worth one credit, and students can expect two to three hours of homework per week for this class.

ACT Test Preparation

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In order for students to prepare for their best ACT test performance, they must invest their time to practice and plan. Each student’s goal for taking this class is simple: find your best balance between accuracy and efficiency for your best score.

Accuracy includes answering questions correctly. In order to achieve their maximum accuracy, students can expect much instruction and practice for all four required sections of the ACT: English, math, reading, and science. Efficiency involves answering questions correctly within a certain amount of time. This course instructs students in using and practicing over 40 combined test-taking strategies specific for each
section of the ACT in order to help them maximize their efficiency. On test day, students will have greater confidence due to their having completed much practice for each section of the ACT (thus maximizing their accuracy) along with using strategies to help them navigate the test efficiently.

For optimal benefit, it is suggested that students complete math through Geometry and Algebra II for this class. Students can expect 2 – 3 hours of homework to prepare for each class meeting. This is a one-semester course and counts as 0.5 elective credit.

German 2

DESCRIPTION:

German 2 is a continuation of the skills we began building in German 1.  We take the basic building blocks from level 1, where we learned to introduce ourselves and carry on basic conversation, and branch out to talk about things in the past, present, and future.  We will learn about travel, restaurants, leisure activities, and sports in Germany, all while expanding our command of the language and having a lot of fun.
