Pre-Algebra Upper Middle School Math (7th/8th Grade)

Before registering for class, a placement test must be taken by all students who have not previously taken a HARC math class.  The test is to ensure that your student is in the best class for their abilities.  Since the registration fee is non-refundable, we recommend that you wait to register until after taking the test and receiving approval. If you want to lock in a spot prior to taking the test, you may do so, but please remember that you will not receive a refund if your child fails the test.

Course Description:

Would you like to take the fear out of algebra and assure your child is well prepared for high school math?  Pre-algebra is the place to make that happen.  In this class we will briefly review important math skills and then move directly into basic algebra skills and concepts. Basic algebraic concepts will be introduced concretely through Dr. Borensen’s Hands on Equations program.  (see instructor’s Vimeo)

It is important that students are competent in the use of decimals, fractions, percents, and integers.  These concepts will be reviewed as we begin the year but will not be taught thoroughly as in earlier grades.  Topics we will cover throughout the year include operations with real numbers, algebraic expressions, algebraic equations and inequalities, ratios, proportions, percents, functions and linear equations, probability, and statistics.  Real life problems will be integrated into the program to give purpose and meaning to what students learn.

Materials and Text:

  • We will be using Prealgebra/All Things Algebra by Gina Wilson. Each lesson includes guided notes and homework. Review videos will be available for each lesson as well.
  • You will purchase the curriculum from the teacher the first day of class. Students will place the materials they receive into a binder.  This will allow us to add extra handouts or notes.
