English 4 Practical Applications

DESCRIPTION:

English 4 Practical Applications will prepare your senior, or junior, for college and beginning a
career. This course will focus on four aspects, two per semester, to develop your student’s skills for whatever may come after high school.

1. The first part will focus on writing personal essays for college applications, filling out
   those college applications, and obtaining the recommendations that are required when
   applying for college or a job.
2. Next, we will focus on research writing and presentation. While they may have done
   presentations before, we will specifically focus on finding credible sources, presenting
   the information effectively, working as a group, and excelling in the presentation
   techniques and body language that go into presentations. This will give them the
   confidence they need to set them apart from their peers when it comes to group projects
   and presentations in college.
3. The third part will talk about scholarship applications. We will apply for specific
   scholarships together and talk about techniques that will benefit your child whether the
   format of the scholarship be an in-person presentation of themselves or a written piece.
4. Lastly, we will spend the second half of the spring semester focusing on resume writing
   and interview techniques that will prepare them for internship or job applications.
   This class provides a practical application for the skills they have been learning throughout high
   school and counts as one English credit. Depending on what unit we are in, homework will take
   approximately 1-3 hours a week.
